OpenAI's latest rollout lets eligible U.S. users securely connect Apple Health, medical records, and fitness data to ChatGPT, making every health conversation more personal and context aware.
Until now, every health conversation with ChatGPT started from scratch.
You had to upload lab reports, paste medical notes, explain medications, or remind ChatGPT about an injury before asking your actual question.
That changes today.
OpenAI has started rolling out Health in ChatGPT to all logged-in U.S. users aged 18 and older, allowing them to securely connect Apple Health and supported medical records directly to ChatGPT. Once connected, the AI can understand your health information in context, compare new results with previous records, and provide more personalized answers without asking you to repeat the same history every time.
The feature is available on web and iOS across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, making it one of OpenAI's broadest consumer health launches to date.
More importantly, it signals a shift in how ChatGPT is evolving. Instead of simply answering questions, it is beginning to understand the context behind them.
According to OpenAI's announcement, people already ask ChatGPT more than 300 million health-related questions every week. The company believes those conversations become significantly more useful when ChatGPT understands medications, lab results, sleep patterns, activity levels, and recent medical visits alongside the question being asked.
"Health in ChatGPT is starting to roll out to U.S. users. You can securely connect Apple Health and supported medical records to understand your information in context, track what has changed, and have more informed conversations," OpenAI said while announcing the rollout.
That vision is shared by OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman, who highlighted the scale of health conversations already happening on ChatGPT.
"300 million people use ChatGPT each week for health queries. You can now securely connect supported medical records so ChatGPT can understand your personal context and be more helpful to you."
ChatGPT No Longer Treats Every Health Question Like a New Conversation
The biggest upgrade isn't simply that ChatGPT can read medical records.
It's that it no longer has to start every health conversation with zero context.
With your permission, ChatGPT can now reference information such as medications, lab results, recent doctor visits, sleep data, workouts, and daily activity while answering questions. Instead of comparing a single blood test in isolation, it can explain how results have changed over time or suggest questions worth asking during your next appointment.
Here's what users can currently connect.
Supported sources | Examples |
|---|---|
Medical records | Epic, Oracle Health, One Medical |
Health platforms | Apple Health, Function Health |
Wellness data | Sleep, workouts, daily activity |
Personal health details | Medications, conditions, lab results |
The Health section still exists in ChatGPT's sidebar, where users can manage connected accounts, browse synced records, and review trends. The difference is that Health is no longer isolated inside its own workspace. It can now become part of everyday conversations whenever users grant permission.
That change wasn't accidental.
OpenAI says early testing revealed that more than 70 percent of health-related conversations happened outside the dedicated Health experience. People naturally discussed injuries while planning workouts, mentioned allergies while asking for recipes, or referenced medications during completely different conversations.
Rather than forcing users into a separate product, OpenAI decided to bring Health into the main ChatGPT experience.
That may sound like a small design decision, but it fundamentally changes how people interact with AI.
Instead of opening a health app first, users simply continue the conversation they're already having.
OpenAI Is Betting That Context Matters More Than Better Answers
Health in ChatGPT didn't appear overnight.
OpenAI first introduced a limited preview in January 2026, testing whether people actually wanted AI that understood their medical history instead of treating every conversation independently.
The answer became obvious.
When the preview launched, OpenAI reported around 230 million health-related conversations every week. That number has now crossed 300 million, making healthcare one of ChatGPT's largest real-world use cases.
The company also discovered something unexpected.
More than 70 percent of health conversations never happened inside the dedicated Health workspace.
People were asking about sore knees while planning workouts, discussing medications when building meal plans, or trying to understand lab reports in the middle of unrelated conversations.
Instead of asking users to switch into a separate health mode, OpenAI decided to bring Health directly into the conversations they were already having.
The result is an experience that feels less like opening another app and more like talking to an assistant that already understands your situation.
Privacy Is the Feature OpenAI Had to Get Right
Connecting medical records to an AI assistant raises an obvious question.
Can you trust it with your health data?
OpenAI says users stay in control at every step. Health information is only available after explicit permission, and ChatGPT asks before using connected data unless users choose to always allow it.
The company also says medical records, Apple Health data, and conversations that use this information are never used to train foundation models or target ads. Users can disconnect their accounts whenever they want, and synced health data is scheduled for deletion within 30 days after removal.
Privacy Control | What OpenAI Says |
|---|---|
AI model training | Health data is not used |
Advertising | Never used for ad targeting |
User permission | Required before using connected data |
Delete data | Removed within 30 days after disconnecting |
Memory | Temporary Chat prevents long-term memories |
For a feature built around highly personal information, these safeguards are as important as the AI itself.
Early Users Say the Biggest Benefit Isn't Faster Answers
One of the earliest testers, Blake, used Health in ChatGPT to organize years of diagnoses, imaging reports, surgery notes, and lab results into a single timeline.
Instead of jumping between different patient portals, he could finally see how everything connected. He also found it easier to prepare for appointments and explain his medical history to physical therapists and trainers.
Other testers reported similar experiences.
Some used ChatGPT to better understand medications before visiting their doctor. Others used activity and sleep data to adjust workout routines after injuries. One example shared by OpenAI showed ChatGPT recommending a 25-minute brisk walk after dinner, based on recent activity trends and a missed workout earlier in the week.
The common theme wasn't replacing doctors.
It was spending less time organizing information and more time understanding it.
How ChatGPT Compares With Claude and Gemini
OpenAI isn't the only company bringing AI into healthcare, but its latest rollout stands out for making the feature available to free users from day one.
Platform | Personal Health Data | Medical Records | Available to Free Users |
|---|---|---|---|
ChatGPT | Apple Health, supported records | Yes | ✅ |
Claude | Apple Health, Android Health Connect | Limited | No |
Gemini | Enterprise healthcare partnerships | Limited consumer access | No |
While competitors continue focusing heavily on enterprise healthcare, OpenAI is betting that everyday consumers want an AI assistant capable of understanding their personal health context during normal conversations.
That shift could make healthcare one of the first truly mainstream uses of personal AI.
AI News MI Insight
The real story isn't that ChatGPT can now read your medical records. It's that OpenAI is teaching ChatGPT to remember different parts of your life with your permission. First came conversations. Then files. Now health. Context is quietly becoming ChatGPT's biggest competitive advantage, and healthcare may be the clearest example yet of why that matters.
What Happens Next?
The current rollout is limited to eligible U.S. users on web and iOS, but it's unlikely to stop there.
Expect support for more hospital systems, additional wearable integrations, Android compatibility, and eventually international expansion where local privacy regulations allow. OpenAI also says it will continue improving its health-focused models using physician-built evaluations such as HealthBench Professional, as outlined in the official product announcement
If this rollout succeeds, Health in ChatGPT could become the blueprint for how AI assistants handle other forms of deeply personal information in the future.
